FRAUD ALERT
Important Fraud Alert: New Text Message Scams Targeting Credit Union Members
Credit unions nationwide are reporting a surge in sophisticated text-based scams (known as smishing) aimed at deceiving members into revealing sensitive information. At Altura Credit Union, your security is our top priority. We strongly urge all members to remain alert, take their time when reacting to unexpected messages, and always Stop, Check & Think before acting.
Below are three of the most common scams currently circulating:
1. Text Message (SMS) Scam Using Fake Credit Union Website
Members have reported receiving text messages containing a link to what appears to be a secure credit union website. While the link uses “https” and traffic is routed through Cloudflare, creating an impression of safety, the site is fraudulent.
Key features of this scam include:
Use of the Hands, Family & Globe logo and traditional credit union colours (not the Altura logo, but widely recognised nationally and internationally).
A convincing layout designed to prompt members to enter credit union and personal information.
A domain containing “mycu-ireland.im” — Altura Credit Union does not use this or any similar domain.
This scam is highly sophisticated and deliberately designed to pressure individuals into reacting quickly out of fear. Please do not open any such links or enter personal information.
2. “New Payee Added” Text Message Scam
Members have also received fraudulent messages claiming that a new payee (e.g., “Jamie Smith”) has been added to their account, instructing them to call a number if the action was not authorised.
These messages are false.
Members should not call the number provided.
Never share personal or banking information with any unsolicited caller.
3. Standing Order Set-Up Scam
Another scam involves messages such as:
“CREDIT UNION: Standing order of €4,850 to Shane Duffy set up successfully. Reply Y if you requested this, or N if not.”
These messages are also fraudulent. Replying poses a risk of exposing personal information.
