Scams To Be Aware Of
Scam No. 1
Altura Credit Union is encouraging members to remain vigilant following a warning about a telephone scam in which a fraudster impersonated a representative of the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU).
Scammers are targeting the public, in the hopes they are a credit union member. Someone calls claiming that unusual activity had been detected on their account. The caller asked the member for personal information and subsequently requested their PIN. The member recognised that the request was suspicious and ended the call.
The Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) will never contact a member of a credit union. They have no access to member data, and would never be reaching out to a member of any credit union directly.
Never share your security details
Fraudsters can sound convincing and may claim to represent a trusted organisation such as your credit union or the Irish League of Credit Unions.
You should never disclose your PIN, passwords, one-time security codes or other confidential security information to anyone over the phone. A request for this information should immediately raise a red flag.
What should you do if you receive a suspicious call?
If you receive an unexpected call about your account:
- Stop and think before providing any personal information.
- Never share your PIN, password or one-time security codes.
- End the call if you are uncomfortable or suspicious.
- Contact Altura Credit Union directly using a contact method you know and trust (0818 345 925).
- Don't rely on the number displayed on your phone as proof that the caller is genuine (unfortunately, this can be made to look genuine, even if it is not).
If in doubt - hang up and check with us
Scammers often create a sense of urgency by claiming that there is suspicious or unusual activity on an account. Don't allow yourself to be rushed into providing information.
If you receive a call and you're unsure whether it is genuine, hang up and contact Altura Credit Union directly.
And please take a moment to share this warning with friends and family. Making someone aware of what to look out for could help protect them from becoming a victim of fraud.
Scam No. 2
Altura Credit Union is reminding members to remain alert to suspicious text messages, links and phone calls.
We have been made aware of a scam in which an individual can first receive a text containing a link requesting information, followed by a phone call seeking further details about their account. On this occasion, the text was to help save a significant amount on their electricity costs, because they are a credit union member. Not a genuine offer.

Fraudsters can make their communications appear convincing and may already know certain details about you. This does not mean the communication is genuine.
Never provide personal, account or security information in response to an unsolicited message or phone call. Avoid clicking on unexpected links, and never allow yourself to be rushed into taking action.
If you receive a call claiming to be from Altura Credit Union and have any concerns about whether it is genuine, end the call and contact us directly using the official contact details on our website.
If you believe you may have clicked a fraudulent link or shared information with a scammer, contact Altura Credit Union as soon as possible.
Stay alert. Stop. Think. Check.
